Music Class Lesson # 8 A & B

K-4

Hello Jamesville Heros!!!!! I know we had some difficult news this week, but we are strong and together we can get through this!  Keep singing, dancing, and playing and soon we will be making music together again.  I love you all and miss you each day.

Lesson A: K- 2

Sing Hello song:  https://youtu.be/NAvc-NLVo7U
Sing and dance along!  Practice speaking the different ways to say hello by stopping the video and speaking it out loud! It is fun to learn other languages, it teaches us that we are all part of a big world.

Music is like that too!  Music is known as the “ Universal Language”, Which means that people all over the world use music to communicate how a person or a group of people think or feel.   Check out this String Quartet "talking” through music. https://youtu.be/Qj_MzFstr6c

Extension: Kindergarten
Sing this Song about barnyard animals communicating through music!  Listen to the sounds of the instruments as they play the sound of the animals:

Lesson B:  Grades 1-2
Using Sign language is another way to communicate with each other when
we combine music and sign language, we have a powerful message.
Sing: Practice This Pretty planet with actions

Composer Highlight:  A composer is someone who writes music and uses his music
to communicate ideas and feelings with others.  A very famous American composer by the
name of Aaron Copland, who lived right here in New York, wrote a lot of fantastic music.
We are going to learn about him and sing one of his silliest songs.

Aaron Copland is one of the most famous American composers of all time.

Copland was born in Brooklyn, New York, and went to France as a teenager to
study music with Nadia Boulanger, who helped Copland create his own style.
Copland wrote music with a very "American" sound. Some of his most famous pieces are
his ballets -- Billy the Kid, Rodeo, and Appalachian Spring. Copland's music has
become a great part of American history.

Listen and Sing: A silly song about barnyard animals “ talking” through music.
Listen as the orchestra plays the animal sounds.  Mr. Copland thought about how
the animal sounds in real life and chose instruments to represent the animals.
After you listen, sing along to the sing-along video and create actions
to represent each animal!  Send me a video of you performing your actions if you’d like!
Grades 3 & 4:
Lesson A:   As you know there was a very special day this past week “Star Wars Day”
“May the 4th be with you!”
Watch this trailer video and listen to the music underscoring and how the music
helps to make the action of the video more exciting and connects you to the story.

The extremely famous and talented composer (the writer of the music) behind this
music is John Williams.  John Williams (born February 8, 1932) is an
American composer and conductor. He has composed many soundtracks
for blockbuster movies such as Star Wars, Superman, Jaws, Indiana Jones,
Jurassic Park, and Harry Potter.
Read more about him and his life here: https://kids.kiddle.co/John_Williams
Watch an interview with John Williams and answer the questions below: Use a
A separate piece of paper or use a google doc.

1. Where was Mr. Williams born? Where did he move to?

2. Did he come from a musical family?

3. How old was He when John Williams begin writing music?

4. What is your favorite fact that you learned about John Williams after
 listening to the interview?

5. What makes the difference in a hit movie?

6. What did Mr. Williams say was the most important advice was for young people?

Lesson B:  Highlight on composer/songwriter Toni Watson:

Toni Watson, otherwise known as Tones and I, was discovered when she began “busking”
on the streets of Byron Bay, Australia, in 2017.
Busking is a way for musicians to get heard in Australia.  Musicians set up on certain
streets and play for whoever is walking by. Toni wrote the music and lyrics for  Dance monkey.
The lyrics were inspired by her experiences of Busking. People would stop and listen to her
play and want to hear her more and more.   "Dance Monkey", was released in May 2019
and reached number one in over 30 countries!  Not bad for a teenager! Here is one of her
memories of how she learned she could sing” She "One day I was at the park with my family,
all my cousins, and stuff, in Frankston... We were all just singing a song and my aunty was like
oh guys, she can actually hold a note.' I think that's the earliest memory of someone actually
pointing me out as someone that has an ability to sing. I was probably like 7 years old."
Play Cup game with the song “ Dance Monkey”:  Follow the directions on the
    Game sheet.
Remember that the Verse is the part of the music that tells the story.  The words change
for each verse.  We are going to call this part of the music section A.
The Refrain is the part of the music that repeats the same way each time.
It is similar to the main idea of a  story. This part is called section B
The Instrumental part or sometimes known as the Bridge of the music,
is a new musical part and it is between other parts of the music, usually,
the bridge is at the end of the song, after the refrain and before a  repeat of the refrain.
It is like the filling that you might have in birthday cake.  The filling is in between the layers of the cake.
Just like the bridge is in between the layers of the refrain. The bridge of the music is called section C.
Therefore, the way the music is put together, or the order of the parts is called Form.
The Form for Dancy Monkey" is ABABCB.

Extention: After you play the cup game.  Make up your own cup game to Dance monkey
or another favorite song of yours! You can write down your game, or record your directions and record
yourself playing the game with someone!  Then share it with me!

    Mrs. Russell       Happy music making!
