Music Class # 10

Memorial Day Celebration
All Grades

This past weekend was Memorial Day!
All Grades are going to sing Patriotic Songs to Celebrate Memorial day.

K-4 do the following:

What is Memorial Day?
watch this short video that explains what Memorial day is
and why we Celebrate it.

Today we are going to Honor our Hero's by singing Patriotic songs.
A patriotic song is about honoring your country.  Today we are going to learn
several American patriotic songs.  Memorial Day is an American holiday.

Have you ever been to a parade?  As you listen to pretend to play a band instrument and have a family Parade!
This is called "Stars and Stripes" by John Phillip Sousa.
You will hear this song a lot in parades that celebrate the USA.
 It is a patriotic song.
**Mr. Sousa was born on November 6, 1854 – March 6, 1932.  He was an American composer and conductor, primarily for American military marches. He is known as "The March King"

Get your parade on and enjoy the "Stars and Strips"

Think about it:
K-1: Can you hear the loud (Forte) and the soft (piano) parts of the music?
Go back and listen: this time find a way to show the loud and soft parts in the music.  You could add an action for each part or dance differently to each part or tap the beat in different ways and places for each part!  be creative and have fun.
2-4: Can you hear the different parts of the music?
What is the form of the piece? ABA or AABBCC? Or something else.
Listen again to find out!
Hint:  listen to the music, and write down a letter for each part, beginning with A. When you hear something different than A, write B. When you hear something different than B and its not the A part, call that C.
Bonus: What high sounding instrument plays a solo (by itself)?

Grades K-1

On Memorial Day we say Thank you to the brave men and women who help keep us safe and free.
Learn this Thank you song to all those who served our country.  The song talks about wearing a poppy.  A poppy is a type of flower and it is a symbol of Memorial Day.
As you sing, create actions for the words.

 Grades 1-4
Next up is a song by American composer, Samual Francis Smith
October 21,1808 - November 16,1895

1-4: Listen to the song and find out: How many verses does this song have?  Does the song have a refrain?
2-4: The mood of the piece is serious:  Why do you think the song sounds serious?

*Bonus:  What do you think each verse means?

Extension: For Fun, Sing along to these Patriotic Favorites!:
