Broadway Beat



Hi musicians:  I created this page so that you could practice anywhere, anytime.  You will find the script and a link to a youtube video of another school performing this show and two other songs.  Please use the videos as a way to practice the songs.  The script is different than the one on the video.  We will also perform the songs with different motions, but the tunes are the same.  Have fun!!!!

Find your name in the script, print script and memorize!  Be ready to rock your part when we get back from vacation!


Hello everyone! I hope you know your parts, because on Monday, January 29, we will be on stage acting out the show!

Here is the latest costume info:

JES team #1: Wear your Hero shirt!
All other students: Wear a school provided T-shirt. Please pair with appropriate, clean and neat pants or skirt. You may also wear a jacket or sweater to fill out the outfit.
Shoes should be clean and comfortable.
Teacher and Hosts: Wear professional looking outfits. Please check your closet for something that would be appropriate. If you need help, ask.

Introduction team:
Felipe :  Welcome to our 4th grade musical “Broadway Beat”.  We have been working on hard on the show and we hope you enjoy it.  
Olivia:  We want to thank Mr. Reyes, our teachers, our parents and the custodial staff for helping us put this musical together.  
Please silence your cell phones, and remember, no flash photography while we are performing!   Thank you.  
Savannah W: Our show begins with a group of students from Jamesville, NY heading off on a field trip to NYC to compete on a brand new TV game show Called “Broadway Beat!  The students have been studying for weeks to be the best at Broadway trivia. they hope to Do well on the show.
Joseph Lore: At the start of the show, we find the students entering the train station to head to NYC and they are very excited about their upcoming adventure.
All:   Now sit back, relax and enjoy the “Broadway Beat”!

Opening scene:   (Train station with people traveling everywhere with luggage! Center group of students with their teacher heading to New York City to be a part of a game show called Broadway beat.
Groups of students are crossing stage left and Stage right looking like they're in a hurry. 1 student stops at it sits on the bench to read a paper another student bumps into another says loud excuse me. Then the students and the teacher begin to talk . Takes place in front of a closed curtain on the stage. )

Travelers: ?

S1. Kayla: I am really excited to go to New York City!
S.2 Maggie  :  Oh boy I can't wait!  I have never been to New York City before.
S 3 Cameron:   Just think, we are going to be contestants on the brand new TV show, BROADWAY BEAT!!
S4 Kayla: I know, I can hardly wait, I have been working so hard to memorize all those shows and songs!
All Students, except Regan:  ( ad lib lots of chatter)Yeah me too! You got that right! etc...
S Regan: ( confused) What, I thought we were just going to shop till we drop on 5th Ave!
S5 Rachel :   No silly, why do you think we have been learning all about the history of Musical
Theatre?  
S6 John S.: Remember, all the books we read, and music we listened to???
S7 Sadie: Yeah, that was to prepare us to compete on the show!
S8 Reaghan: Oh, that’s what we were doing… I thought it was just a good excuse to hang out together, listen to some cool music and eat some pizza!
All: (giggle, but look confused)
S9 Kirk: You mean you weren’t paying attention!?  You didn’t study?  
S10 Reaghan :  Ummmmmmm
All: Well…..
S11 Reaghan:   ummm, well ah,..... No.
All: WHAT!
S.12 Sara:   OH no!  What are we going to do! (beginning to panic)  
(All students, except student 4,  gets worried, everyone is in an uproar.)  
S.13 Savannah S.:   I Can’t believe this!  How could you NOT Study!
S.14 Michael C.:   This is a nightmare!!!!
All Students:  ( frantically) We’re doomed!
Teacher Mya: Now, now kids, don’t worry,  just remember, to do your personal best and have fun! That's all that matters! ( kids grumble and groan)  Hey  Look here comes the Train now !!!

Conductor Cameron M: All Aboard, Non-stop to New York City Grand Central Station.
Ah1, ah2 ah 3.....Let's Go!

All: (chant,  crossing the stage)   Engine, Engine Number 9, heading down the New York line,  if the train goes off the track, you bet, I’ll get my money back!  Chug a chug a choo choo.  Woo woo! (repeat and fade away as group leaves stage and enters on the show)
Conductor Cameron:  ( sound train whistle)   Arrived, New York City!  
Students and teacher:  YAY
Student group 1 (4T & 4D):  Whoa---Hey, do you hear that!
Students group 2 (4O & 4P) :  Hear what?
Teacher Mya:  Shh, Listen …

N: 1 Daniel L. :It's the sound of people entering the theater on the most famous street in the world.
N. 2 Natalie: It's the sound of dancing feet and orchestras tuning up!
N. 3 Jennifer: It’s the sound of Rodgers and Hammerstein and Lerner and Lowe.  
N. 4 Lillian: Webber and Rice and Stephen Sondheim and Stephen Schwartz.  
N. 5: Shayne:It’s the sound of Oklahoma and Cats!
N.6 Viet: The King and I and Wicked!

Teacher Mya:   Do you hear that beat? It’s the beat of Broadway!  And nobody can stop it!  

(Students  and Narrators go out of gym to the stage and  take places on stage.  Curtain opens to reveal the game show set.)


Scene 2 Game show stage:

Director Gavin:  Welcome Ladies and Gentlemen.  Please get seated, we are about to start!
(Students and Narrators take places, contestants are already in places.)  
Director Addison:  Ok, here we go.  Roll camera one!  Broadway Beat take 1 in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1!  Action!
Announcer,  Cameron M:  Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls !  Welcome to the first-ever production of the Brand new game show, “Broadway Beat!”  where trivia meets musical theatre in a new and exciting way!
Host 1 Anthony R.:  During this game the 2 teams will compete in front of a live audience to try and win points for their team by answering trivia questions about musical theatre.  The team with the most points wins!  After each correct answer we will have a chance to see and hear a live rendition of a song from that musical!  Oh what a night it’s going to be!
Host 2  Mikyal:  Yes, so hold onto your hats, because we are in for a “Show Boat” ( drum cadence) full of fun!     Contestants get ready to answer the first question.

Host 3 Keegan:  Listen to the clues to figure out the name of the musical and then tap the buzzer when you think you have the correct answer. First team with the correct answer, wins!.  (everyone looks excited!)  Remember, the team at the end with the most points, wins!  
All:  Yay, woo hoo!  Yippee!  ( ad lib words of excitement!)
All Hosts:  Everybody ready?
All Cast:  YES!!!
All Hosts:  Let's Begin!
Director:  Alright players to your places!  ( Direct the first group of questionnaires to the microphones)  and “ Broadway Beat”  take one… ACTION!

Q1 Jacob: In 1904 the Musical “Little Johnny Jones”  by George M Cohan, opened up on Broadway  giving us great songs such as: “Give My Regards to Broadway” and Yankee Doodle Boy”
Q2 Jenna:  Then in 1905 Mr. Cohan wrote a great tune called “ You’re a grand old Flag”
Q3 Mara : He was known as the Father of American Musical Theatre.

Q 4 Mara and Jenna: The first question of the night for 50 points is,

( All 4 Teams scramble and talk amongst themselves…continue with this action after each question and after every wrong answer, act excited or disappointed after each question, depending upon if your team answers the question correctly or not.)

Mara : Come on teams, keep thinking!
S 15 Sara: ( hits buzzer)  Ummm I think I got it, is it Maestro?
Jacob :  Oh dear, Hardly!
C. 3 Chase: (Hits buzzer)  ( with a lot of enthusiasm and blurts out) Macaroni!!!
S. 16 Cameron K:  ( hits Buzzer and shouts)  Marcello?
Q.5 Jenna:  Ha! Not even close!
C 5 Amar:  (hits Buzzer and very hesitantly  answers )  Marcus?

Host group 1 (4P & 4D);  I am sorry, but you are all wrong.

All Hosts  Michael!   
S 17 John:  Aw man, I knew that, why didn’t I shout it out , I knew it, I knew it!!!!
Q 1-5:  YES!  
Q 6: Jacob:  George Michael Cohan was a very talented playwright, composer, entertainer, lyricist, actor,  singer  (take big, loud breath), dancer AND producer! (act out of breath)
Q.7 Mara and Jenna:  So, make way for our salute to the late, but great George Michael Cohan!

Host 5 Sinead:  Yes, As the saying goes, Have I got a deal for you,  Right here in River City!.  Get the next answer right, and we’ll double your points!  From 50 to 100 points…(snaps finger) just like that!

All contestants:  Yay!!!  (Ad. lib Shouts of  excitement)
Host 6 Stephan:  Miss Director, please bring the next team  of questionnaires up!

N. 8 Anthony G:  In 1957, a new show hit the broadway stage and since has become a classic!
N 9 Darian :  It was written by Meredith Willson.  The story was about a con man named Harold Hill who travels town to town pretending to be a band director.  Harold sells expensive band uniforms and instruments to the the townspeople of River City, Iowa.  
N 11 Abby:  But Harold Hill was no band leader.  He had a master plan of the worst kind. He was going to collect the townspeople’s money for the uniforms, instruments and music lessons,  then skip town before delivering the goods!
N12 Michael C.: That’s right, he was a con man, a shyster…..he was a thief!
N 13 Kaylie:  However, his plan was foiled! He wasn’t planning on meeting the librarian  who was smart and she saw right through him. Neither one of them planned on falling in love…
All cast :   ewee!  Gross...     
C 7 Drew :  Oh come on, you could have left that detail out!
N14 Sam K. :   The show was a huge hit, It won five Tony awards, the highest honor for a Broadway show.  
N 8-13 :  How many Trombones did Harold Hill sing about in the famous show “ Music Man”?  
(All contestants talk and discuss loudly the possible answer, ad lib )

S 18 Sadie:  ( hits buzzer )  I got it! I got it!  Its 121 right!, right?  I know its right 121!! ( dances to show off)
Host group 1:  Yikes! That’s not even in the ballpark! ( S18 looks really sad and disappointed, sits down and pouts)
C9 Ellie:  (hits buzzer and shyly speaks) I think I know it……. Is it …… 76…..?
All Hosts group 2:    Yes!!!! You got it!

Host 7 Braden :  That answer is worth  50 points, but we promised to double the points, so 100 points to your team 2 !!!!
 ( team 2 goes crazy!)

Teacher:  Wait! Now HOLD EVERYTHING!   Do you hear that beat?  I know that sound, It’s the sound of marching feet and seventy - six trombones!

Harold Hill: Cameron M:  Ladies and Gentlemen, Have I got a deal for you!  Today and today only, your first lesson on your new instrument is completely free!  So step right up to buy your uniform and instrument at a discount price.  Then you, yes even you, could be playing in this fantastic band!  Here we go! 1,2,3 4
(Harold Begins leading the parade, Librarian is shaking her head and reading a book as she follows along, leading the parade behind Harold)

(Song begins after Harold is finished)

Host 8 Stephan:  Wow that was exciting.  I always enjoy a good parade, don’t you?  
Host 9 Sinead:  Oh yes, I remember going to parades as kid,  I always had a good time. My parents and I  would get the best seats right  at the start of the parade and we’d bring snacks and then….
Host 10 Anthony:  (interrupting)  Hey, Hey now, no time for storytelling, we have a show to do…
Host 11 Sinead:  Oh yeah, I guess you're right.  
Host 12 Braden B:  Now, without any further adieu, here comes our next set of questions
Director Ethan:  Ok Questionnaire group 3… you are on! Downstage...Quick!!


Host 13 Ryan:  Alright everyone, listen close because the next question is worth…. 100 points.  
(loud eruption of excitement sounds from the contestants and audience)
OK,Let's hear the next question please!

Q 3 Adrianna:  What do the shows, “Oklahoma”, “South Pacific”, “Carousel” and “The Sound of Music” all have in common?  
N 14 Jaelyn R:  Wait, you forgot one!   Don’t forget “The King and I”

(contestants talk amongst themselves, shout out random answers… ad lib after a few seconds c10 speaks.)

C10 London:  They are all musicals???
(wrong answer buzzer sounds)
Host 14  Mikyal:  No Mam!  Ah, besides, we kinda know that already, this is a show about musicals, remember….
C. 10 London:  Oh yeah… oops!
C. 11: Bryce:   (Hits buzzer) They all have short titles!  

(all contestants, hosts  and  the audience groans..)
All:  Oh brother!

S19 Rachel: ( hits the buzzer, clear throat and says in a very professor type of voice)  All of these musicals were based on books and epitomized the development of the "book musical", a musical play where the songs and dances are fully integrated into a well-made story with serious dramatic goals that are able to evoke genuine emotions other than laughter.

CAST Hugh? ... ( looks very confused)  
Host 14 Mikyal :what did he/she say?
Host 15 Keegan: aaaaaah... I have no idea!
Host 16 Anthony :  Well, that was Very nicely stated, but, not the answer we are looking for.  
( C12, looks sad and sits down)

(Contestants continue to shout out responses)
C13 Giuliana: I got it,  I got it this time!  These shows all have the same composers, Rodgers and Hammerstein!
S 20 Reaghan:  Rodgers and who??
S21 Maggie:  (sternly) We told you that you should have studied!
Teacher:  Yes, and if you DID study, you would have known that Rodgers and Hammerstein were two of the greatest writers of Broadway shows ...Like ever!
Host 17 Braden: Yes!!! You got it!  Congratulations! To team 2--------- you have just won 100 Points.  ( The team goes crazy!)  

N 15 Janelle: The next song is from the 1951 rodgers and Hammerstein's hit musical called “ The Sound of Music.
N.16 Katherine:  The Sound Of Music is based on the story about Maria Von Trapp and her adventures as a nanny for a family with a lot of kids!.  
This scene is from the part of the musical when Maria takes the children into the mountains for a picnic.
N.17 Janelle:  The children don’t know how to sing, so she decides to teach them with the song “ Do-RE-MI”

Host18 Stephan:  Yes, Maria has taken the children on a picnic and they are sitting on a beautiful hillside in the mountains and then she invites them to sing with her.  Let’s go to the scene:

Ella: I am really excited, we have never been on a picnic before!

Maria( Rachael):  (Enters stage left) Come along children, (stops downstage, center, looks around) Oh yes, this looks like a perfect spot!  Let’s Sit down here and sing! (sit)  
Child 1 (Kiarrah): Sing?  We don’t know how to sing!  
Maria:   What?!  Well then, I will  teach you to sing!:  
Child 2 Sam D.:  No way, I don’t sing!  
Child 3 Nicole:  I CAN’T SING
Maria:   Why,of course you can!  Everyone can sing! You just need learn.  Listen and I will teach  you..   We just have to start at the beginning.  

(Start song)
(Solo: Maria= Rachel; Small Group:  Kids= Kiarrah, Sam D. and Nicole)

Host 19 Ryan : Hey, if they can learn to sing, we can too!  Come on everyone!   Let's SING!  Everybody together!  Even our terrific audience!
(Everyone, sings).

(Song ends with lots of cheering and clapping from all)

Host 20 Mikyal:  That was fun!!!!   What do we have up next?
Host 21 Keegan: The next musical is surely a charmer.  Let’s see who is the first team to figure it out.  
Host 22 Anthony:  Well, we will just  Have to wait and see, because it's time for a commercial break, we’ll be back right after a word from our sponsor!

Commercial Break
(everyone relaxes and acts like no-one is watching)

Host 23 Sinead:  Hey young lad, would you be a gem and get me some coffee please..
Director Gavin:   Everyone listen up, during our commercial breaks, we usually try to entertain ourselves by telling jokes…..anyone know any….?

(everyone looks around thinking or looking confused)



Joker 1 Drew:  Yeah, I think I have one….. How do all the oceans say hello to each other?  (wait and look around…. )

All:  (ad lib:  I don’t know, hugh?  What could it be etc…...)
Joker 1 Drew:    They wave!
All:  (Laugh hysterically and dramatically)  
Joker 2 Bryce:  Hey I have one too!  What do you call a bear with no teeth?
All:  (ad lib:  I don’t know, hugh?  What could it be etc…...)
Joker 2 Bryce:  A gummy bear!
All:  (Laugh hysterically and dramatically)  
Joker 3 :  (trying to stop laughing to tell joke…)  ahh, thats funny… we’ve got another side splitter!  Ready:  Knock, knock.
All: Who’s there?
Joker 3 Amar:  Cows go.
All:  Cows go who?
Joker 3 Amar:  No, cows go MOO!
ALL:  (burst out in laughter!)
Joker 4 Sara S:  Hey I got one!  What do you call cheese that isn’t yours?  ( Pause) Nacho cheese!  (everyone laughs, over acting…..)
Director Gavin:  Ok, ok everyone, that’s enough!  Break is over, get back to your places!  Hurry!!!  
Director Addison:  Camera one, you are covering stage left, camera two, you are covering stage right
Director Ethan:   We are rolling in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1  Action!
Host 24 Braden : Welcome back everyone to Broadway Beat!  A brand new Broadway Trivia game.
Host 25 Stephan:  Miss Director. Please bring the next group forward.
Director Addison:  Ok!   Question team 4 you’re up ….places please.
Teacher:  Ok boys and girls, we need to think fast  if we want to win this game!
We need to be quick to beat these guys!  They are really good!
But we can do it, we are just as smart…. Hands in, on three….
Students and Teacher:  1, 2, 3  Jamesville Rocks!!!!  ( cheer)
Host 26  Ryan: And to make it a little more interesting, let’s add 50 points if you answer before the timer goes off.  You’ll have 30 seconds!    (contestants show even more excitement)
Director Ethan:  Ok, I am setting the timer for 30 seconds!

Q6 Michael C.. This next show is full of magic and mystery. It started in 2003  and is still going on strong today.  
Q7 Sam K.  Seeing a Broadway show, performing in a broadway show can change you.

N 17 Flora:  At the young age of 23 Stephen Schwartz was an instant Broadway success by writing Godspell.  Wicked has been on Broadway for 13 year now and is still going strong.
N. 19 Emily :   “Wicked” is a story about how the wicked witch from The Wizard of Oz, became wicked!  
N. 20 Jenna:   Seeing the show “Wicked” is a show that can change you, just like making a new friend can change you,“For Good”
N. 21 Jacob: Let’s go to the scene:  Elphaba and Glinda are the most unlikely of friends, Glinda is beautiful and well liked. And Elphaba is,..... Well she is,..... green..
N. 22 Roman: In the scene we are about to see,  Glinda wants to try to help Elphaba become “popular.”  Glinda claims that she can help Elphaba look pretty and act in a way that can help her be more likeable......
N. 23 Mara:  Then, the two discover that friendship is more than skin deep and they realize that they are more alike than they first realized and they both are changed, for Good.  Lets go to the scene.

Host 29 Anthony:  Yes, come on Man, get it together

Host 30 Braden:  The Broadway beat is the rhythm of life that can take us on fantastic adventures, exploring feelings that sometimes only music can capture.  
Host 31 Stephan: Let’s find out what our next adventure is going to be;  Director, Please bring the next questionnaire group forward for our next round.  

Director:  Question team 5, are you ready!?… (Contestants, get really excited and show lots of interest)
Q. 12 Kiarrah : FINALLY!  I thought we would never get our turn!
Director:  (Looks upset at the comment)
Q. 13 Sam D.:  Nevermind her,  We are ready, let’s get this show on the road!

Host 29 Ryan:  Alright, here we go.  Listen close to the clues. Once again, we will set the buzzer and if you answer the question correctly before the buzzer goes off, your team will win an additional 50 points for a total of 100 points!
(Everyone  hoots and hollers!!! Yeah, alright, whoo, etc. Ad lib)

All Directors:  Buzzer is ready!

Q 14 Roman:  The title of the show sounds like it would be only temporary, but it is the 10th longest running show on broadway.

Q 15 Flora:  And this show has been produced in 15 different languages.

Q 16 Emily W.:  This show is the only show ever to win both a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award for best musical.  

Q 17 Nicole:   At one point, this show was so popular that you could buy ready-to-wear clothes for men, women and teenagers based on this popular musical in Bloomingdales in New York City.

(All contestants start to panic)

Host A Stephan:   Oooo, no, sorry,  
Host B Ryan:  Hurry the timer is running out!  10 seconds left!
C. 17 Mustafa: (Talking aloud to team mates) I think I got it, 13!
C.18 William :  No, that’s the  show with an all teenage cast!
Teacher:  Come on kids, 10 more seconds for the extra points !!!
S 25 Kirk: do you think is is” A chorus line”?,
All S on team except 25:  NO!
S. 25 Kirk:   ( upset) Okay, It was just a thought, geezze
S. 26 Savannah :  (hits Buzzer) Is it  Rent!  Is it Rent!?
All Hosts: YES!!!!
Host 30 Mikyal:  Just in time !  50 points plus the extra 50 !  For a total of 100 points to your team 1!  ( team 1 goes crazy)

C 19. Giuliana : (excited) Oh right, I remember now, in 1996, the rock musical RENT hit Broadway.  Then the show went on to win four tony awards and the Pulitzer prize…
(mad at herself) Man, I should have gotten that one!

Host 32 Anthony :  Ok, well this is really exciting!  We are down to the last question and it seems we have a tie! (everyone hoots and hollers)  Director rushes over to the host and hands him a piece of paper…
Host 33  Sinead : ( reads the paper and says)   Hold onto your hats, This just in..we have had a gracious last minute donor and instead of a pat on the back and a silly band in the shape of your favorite broadway character, The winners will now receive an all expense paid weekend trip to NYC for you and a guest to see their favorite Broadway musical!
(All contestants and students go crazy!)

Director Ethan:  Ok sir,  you are up to give the final hint and ask the last question of the evening!  Lets go! ( He moves into his spot)

Host 34 Braden : And now for the final round, and the grand prize!  We have a special celebrity  to give the last clue and questions for evening.  Here is the famous David Reese, from the hit TV show, Joking Around With David!  ( everyone hoots and cheers)    Listen carefully to this riddle to figure out the last musical.

All Hosts:  Hummm ( they huddle and murmur in discussion should we let them hear it again, or not?)
All Hosts:  Ok, one more time ! ( with emphasis)
Q 18 David:  Sure thing, listen close! (Very loudly, and rhythmically)

S28 Kayla:  Ahhhhh!!!  ( hands on head) That just doesn’t make any sense.
Teacher:  Yes it does, THINK about it.  
C. 22 Chase:  ( out loud to the group) What about Bye, Bye Birdie?
All contestants on team:  NO
S29:Reaghan  (Hits Buzzer in excitement, like he/she is sure of answer and then looks confused) Oops, I just forgot ( sits and pouts)
S 30 Michael C & John.  :  (Hits Buzzer and With confidence and yells) “ Grease!”  
Hosts, Director, Teacher and Narrators: jump up and down and shout yes!!!!
Host 35 Mikyal:  Another 50 points to your team.
Host 36 Keegan:  Well, ladies and Gentlemen, Team 1 breaks the tie, for a total of 250 points team 1 and 200 points to team 2!  (everyone is excited and shows it)  
Host 37 Anthony:  What a great show tonight, a really great show.!  
Host 38 Braden:  (Look at students and contestants)  Thank you all for playing and ( look at the audience) thank you for watching!
Host 39 Sinead:  We had some strong contestants today which made for  a competitive and lively show!  a great start for our first live production of “ BROADWAY BEAT”!

Announcer Cameron :  Excuse me, sorry to interrupt, but  I have a very  special announcement. I just received a special note from Team 1 from Jamesville NY.  The Jamesville team has invited team two from Ramapo NJ  on their trip to NYC as their special guests!
(everyone goes nuts!)
